• Lier les formes est très important dans une peinture. Il y a plusieurs possibilités de le faire. Le plus direct et efficace est de les fondre une dans l’autre par des « contours perdus » (dans l’aquarelle la gondole est en fusion avec l’ombre sur l’eau). Une liaison peut être établie par la répétition des formes similaires (on retrouve la gondole plus loin, plus petit et dans un autre angle). Les mêmes valeurs tonales lie les formes (maisons dans l’arrière plan) et elles peuvent être liées avec la même couleur (c’est la raison pour laquelle une peinture monochrome ou à palette réduite possède une forte unité).

• Connecting shapes is an important element in a painting. There are several possibilities to do that. The most direct and efficient way is to create “lost edges” (in the picture gondola and shadow on the water are merged). A more indirect relationship is obtained by repetition of forms (we find the gondola again in smaller shape and seen at different angles). Shapes can be connected to each other by similar tonal values (houses in the background) or by similar colour (that’s why monochrome paintings or reduced palette paintings show strong unity)

• Die Verknüpfung von Formen ist für ein Bild sehr wichtig. Dafür gibt es mehrere Möglichkeiten. Die direkteste und wirksamste Methode ist die der „verlorenen Konturen“ (im Bildbeispiel sind die Gondel und der Schatten auf dem Wasser fusioniert). Eine eher indirekte Verbindung erhält man durch die Wiederholung von Formen (man findet die Gondel wieder, kleiner und unter einem anderen Winkel erscheinend). Formen können außerdem durch ähnliche Tonwerte verknüpft werden (Häuser im Hintergrund) oder durch gleiche Farben (das ist der Grund weshalb monochrome oder mit limitierter Palette gemalte Bilder eine starke Einheit aufweisen).

Arlesienne en costume,  aquarelle – watercolor,  Canson Montval 300 g/m², 30 x40cm

• Pour travailler à l’aise sur « Montval » de Canson il faut bien tremper le papier dans l’eau et le coller sur un support imperméable. Une peinture « mouillé dans mouillé » se fait ainsi sans problème.

• It is quite easy to paint on “Montval” paper (Canson): you have to soak it well and stick it on an impermeable pad. So you can paint even “wet in wet” without any problem.

• Um auf papier “Montval” von Canson problemlos zu malen, muss man es kräftig anfeuchten und auf einem wasserdichten Untergrund kleben. So lässt es sich auch ohne Schwierigkeiten „nass in nass“ malen.

• Une journée magnifique avant hier à Aix en Provence à flâner sur le Cours Mirabeau. Des nombreux monuments et sculptures attendent le peintre à sortir crayons et couleurs. Je m’arrêtais à la fontaine de la Rotonde avec ses trois grâces (Justice, Agriculture et Beaux-Arts). Si vous avez l’occasion de peindre à Aix n’attendez pas trop: l’eau va être coupée dans pas longtemps et la fontaine aura perdue beaucoup de son charme.

• It was a beautiful day to stroll along the Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence. Numerous sculptures and monuments are waiting for the painter. I decided to sketch the three graces of the Rotonde fountain. One is directed to the city of Aix (Justice) the other towards Marseille (Agriculture), the third one faces towards Avignon, she represents Fine Arts. If you have the opportunity to paint in Aix, hurry up, the water will soon be turned off and the fountain will lose a lot of its charm.

• Samstag war ein schöner Tag zum Flanieren auf dem Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence. Zahlreiche Denkmäler und Skulpturen laden den Maler ein, Skizzenbuch und Wasserfarben aus dem Sack zu holen. Ich habe mich für die drei Grazien der Fontaine de la Rotonde entschieden. Eine stellt die Justitia dar (schaut Richtung Stadt), die andere die Landwirtschaft (nach Süden – Marseille) und die dritte, die der Schönen Künste, schaut Richtung Avignon. Falls Sie Gelegenheit haben, in Aix zu malen: keine Zeit verlieren, denn bald wird das Wasser abgestellt und der Brunnen wird erheblich von seinem Charme verloren haben.

Aquarelle – watercolor on Fabriano 300g/m², 16 x 14 cm

• Un dessin au pinceau (aquarelle sans esquisse au crayon préalable) – même si le résultat n’est pas parfait – est toujours un bon exercice pour la coordination œil-main.

• Try a brush drawing (watercolor without pencil sketch) from time to time. Even if the result is not perfect, it is a good eye-hand coordination exercise.

• Selbst wenn das Ergebnis nicht perfekt ist, eine Pinselzeichnung (Aquarell ohne Vorzeichnung) ist immer eine gute Übung für die Auge-Hand Koordination.

Aquarelle – watercolor on Canson Fontenay 300 g/m², 36 x 48 cm

• Le temps à Mormoiron est particulièrement hivernale depuis une semaine : brouillard, givre, neige…L’aquarelle ci-dessus essaye de rendre le sentiment de froid et du vent. J’ai peint d’abord le fond avec le bleu phtalo et outremer et un peu de terre d’ombre naturelle. Dans la peinture mouillée j’ai rajouté du sel fin qui a crée un effet tacheté. Les chiens et le personnage ont été peints avec ocre jaune et rouge indien dans le mouillé et ensuite au sec quelques contours ont été précisés. Comme modèle j’ai utilisé une photo d’un photographe français.

Question : quel est le nom du photographe qui a prise cette photo? (le premier qui donne la bonne réponse reçoit une aquarelle hivernale)

• Since one week the weather here in Mormoiron is especially hibernal: Fog, hoarfrost and snow. The watercolor painting above tries to render the feeling of cold and wind. I first painted the background with phtalo- and ultramarine blue and a little bit of raw umber. In the wet painting I sprinkled some salt to create the mottled structure. The huskies and the musher were painted with yellow ochre, Indian red and ultramarine blue on damp paper. Some contours have been defined on dry paper. The reference photo I used was taken by a French photographer.

Question: who is the author of this photo? (The first right answer gets a winter watercolor)

• Seit einer Woche ist das Wetter in Mormoiron besonders winterlich: Nebel, Raureif und Schnee. Das obige Aquarell versucht die Stimmung von Kälte und Schneesturm wiederzugeben. Zuerst malte ich den Hintergrund mit Phtalo- und Ultramarinblau und etwas Umbra natur. Auf die noch feuchte Farbe streute ich etwas Salz, um die marmorierte Struktur zu erzielen. Die Schlittenhunde und der Musher wurden mit Ocker, Caput mortuum und Ultramarin auf feuchtes Papier gemalt. Nach dem Trocknen habe ich die Silhouetten hier und dort noch etwas präzisiert. Das Vorlagebild wurde von einem französischen Fotografen aufgenommen.
