Aquarelle – watercolor on Fabriano 300g/m², 16 x 14 cm

Un dessin au pinceau (aquarelle sans esquisse au crayon préalable) – même si le résultat n’est pas parfait – est toujours un bon exercice pour la coordination œil-main.

Try a brush drawing (watercolor without pencil sketch) from time to time. Even if the result is not perfect, it is a good eye-hand coordination exercise.

Selbst wenn das Ergebnis nicht perfekt ist, eine Pinselzeichnung (Aquarell ohne Vorzeichnung) ist immer eine gute Übung für die Auge-Hand Koordination.

Hier en manque d’élèves au cours du vendredi je suis allé aux « Baux » de Bedoin, charmant petit hameau au flanc sud du mont Ventoux pour faire quelques esquisses et cueillir une poignée de cerises.

No students this Friday so I went to “Les Baux”, charming little hamlet near Bedoin, nestled on the flank of Mont Ventoux to make some sketches and pick some cherries.

Travailler vite en dessin et peinture nous oblige à nous concentrer sur l’essentiel du motif et d’éviter les détails superflus. Souvent le résultat (comme pour le Mas à Mormoiron) est plutôt chaotique et il faut ensuite rééquilibrer les parties calmes et animées de la peinture.

When we proceed fast in drawing and painting we have to simplify a subject and to avoid too many details. Often the result is somewhat chaotic (as the Mas à Mormoiron) and we have to readjust quiet and animated parts of the painting.

Schnelle Zeichnung und Farbauftrag zwingt uns, das Wesentliche eines Motivs zu erfassen und überflüssige Einzelheiten wegzulassen. Doch oft ist das Ergebnis etwas chaotisch (wie im Mas à Mormoiron) und man muss anschließend ruhige und belebte Partien des Bildes neu verteilen.

Chic, il pleut enfin sur la Provence - Neat, finally it rains in Provence - Super, endlich regnet’s in der Provence.

Aquarelle – watercolor on Fabriano, hot press paper 300 g/m², 13×18 cm

Une première ébauche en couleur sur papier dessin (ça gondole terriblement, on s’en fout) et ensuite sur papier aquarelle lisse Fabriano «300 gr».

At first a colour sketch on drawing paper (which buckles awfully) and then on hot press Fabriano paper 140 lbs.

Eine erste Farbskizze auf Zeichenpapier (das sich wie verrückt wellt) und anschließend auf Fabriano 300 g/m² Papier satiné.

Le papier lisse ou à grain satiné ne laisse pas pénétrer la peinture, elle reste en surface. De ce fait on trouve souvent des taches – un aspect plus impressionniste – mais en même temps, contrairement à ce qu’on lit des fois (« ils ne pardonnent pas les erreurs »), une correction est plus facile.

Hot pressed paper has a smooth finish which keeps colour on the surface. The result is a more spotted painting with a rather impressionist effect, but at the same time corrections are easier (contrary to popular belief) to do, as pigments stay on the surface and thus are less staining.

Dieses glatte Papier lässt das Aquarell oft etwas fleckig erscheinen – ein eher impressionistischer Effekt – erlaubt aber gleichzeitig ( im Gegensatz zur weit verbreiteten Meinung ) eine einfachere Korrektur wenn nötig, da die Pigmente an der Oberfläche bleiben.
