Aquarelle en Provence

Aquarelle – watercolor on Canson Fontenay 300 g/m², 36 x 48 cm

• Le temps à Mormoiron est particulièrement hivernale depuis une semaine : brouillard, givre, neige…L’aquarelle ci-dessus essaye de rendre le sentiment de froid et du vent. J’ai peint d’abord le fond avec le bleu phtalo et outremer et un peu de terre d’ombre naturelle. Dans la peinture mouillée j’ai rajouté du sel fin qui a crée un effet tacheté. Les chiens et le personnage ont été peints avec ocre jaune et rouge indien dans le mouillé et ensuite au sec quelques contours ont été précisés. Comme modèle j’ai utilisé une photo d’un photographe français.

• Since one week the weather here in Mormoiron is especially hibernal: Fog, hoarfrost and snow. The watercolor painting above tries to render the feeling of cold and wind. I first painted the background with phtalo- and ultramarine blue and a little bit of raw umber. In the wet painting I sprinkled some salt to create the mottled structure. The huskies and the musher were painted with yellow ochre, Indian red and ultramarine blue on damp paper. Some contours have been defined on dry paper. The reference photo I used was taken by a French photographer.

• Seit einer Woche ist das Wetter in Mormoiron besonders winterlich: Nebel, Raureif und Schnee. Das obige Aquarell versucht die Stimmung von Kälte und Schneesturm wiederzugeben. Zuerst malte ich den Hintergrund mit Phtalo- und Ultramarinblau und etwas Umbra natur. Auf die noch feuchte Farbe streute ich etwas Salz, um die marmorierte Struktur zu erzielen. Die Schlittenhunde und der Musher wurden mit Ocker, Caput mortuum und Ultramarin auf feuchtes Papier gemalt. Nach dem Trocknen habe ich die Silhouetten hier und dort noch etwas präzisiert. Das Vorlagebild wurde von einem französischen Fotografen aufgenommen.

• De temps en temps il faut essayer d’autres techniques, et je vous conseille la lino-gravure. C’est une méthode d’impression simple. Elle nous oblige à réviser la composition, décider où est le noir, où le blanc, négative et positive. On redécouvre que l’espace entre les objets est aussi important que les choses elles-mêmes. Si la monochromie vous ennuie vous pouvez donner un coup de maquillage avec des couleurs aquarelle (et retourner à notre sujet principal)

• From time to time you should try a different technique like linocut. This is a simple printing method which makes us recapitulate some rules of composition: where is black and where white, negative and positive. We rediscover that space between things is as important as the objects themselves. If the monochromatic image is too boring, beef it up with some watercolors (and so we’re back to our main topic).

• Ab und zu ist es gut, mal ’ne andere Technik zu probieren. Mit dem Linolschnitt z.B. kann man auf simple Art Drucke herstellen. Er schärft den Blick für gute Komposition und zwingt uns nachzudenken: was ist Schwarz und was Weiß, negativ und positiv. Man merkt aufs Neue, dass die Räume zwischen den Dingen genauso wichtig sind wie die Objekte selbst. Falls die Monochromie langweilt kann man den Druck mit Aquarellfarben aufmotzen (wobei wir wieder beim Thema wären).

• Voir la fumée en été en Provence est plutôt chose rare. Mais pourtant aux environs de Sault il y en a actuellement : ce sont les distilleries de lavande qui tournent à plein régime. Comme la «Distillerie du Vallon» ou j’ai peint cette aquarelle enivré par l’odeur de l’essence de lavande.

• Rauch im Sommer sieht man selten in der Provence. Und doch gibt es ihn in der Nähe von Sault : es sind die Lavendel – Destillen, die hier im Moment auf Hochtouren laufen. Wie die «Distillerie du Vallon» die ich, betäubt vom Duft des Lavendelöls, hier gemalt habe.

• In summer smoke is rather rare here in Provence. But around Sault you can find it at the moment. Coming from the lavender distilleries working at full steam like the «Distillerie du Vallon» which I painted here befuddled from the perfume of lavender essence.
