• Des vieilles machines d’agriculture sont partout présentes dans le paysage provençal et je trouve qu’ils sont des jolis sujets à peindre. Un dessin minutieux est important pour se familiariser avec tous ces bidules mécaniques. Mais ça ne veut pas dire qu’il faut les peindre tous, au contraire : que les plus importantes pour la « lisibilité » de l’objet et ceux qui contribuent à la composition. Des pneus de tracteur sont des merveilleux modèles pour l’aquarelliste et même si l’inspiration manque au début, après deux heures d’observation intensive vous allez trouver le jeu d’ombre et de lumière très intéressant.

• Old farming engines are anywhere in the Provençal landscape and very nice subjects to paint. A careful drawing is important to become familiar with all the mechanical stuff, but try to overcome the temptation to put in every detail you see. Only the forms which are important for the “readability” of the subject and these who contribute to the composition should be painted. Tractor tires are beautiful junk for the watercolour painter and if they are not very inspiring at first, after two hours of observation you will find the pattern of light and shadow on them very interesting.

• Alte landwirtschaftliche Maschinen findet man überall in der Provence und sie geben nette Malobjekte ab. Eine genaue Zeichnung ist wichtig, um sich mit dem ganzen Wirrwarr von mechanischen Teilen vertraut zu machen. Aber man muss der Versuchung widerstehen, alle Details zu malen die man sieht: nur Formen, die für die „Lesbarkeit“ des Objekts wichtig sind und die, die zur Komposition beitragen, sollte man verwenden. Traktorreifen sind wunderbare Malmodelle und wenn man auch zunächst nicht inspiriert ist, nach zwei Stunden intensiven Betrachtens findet man das Spiel von Licht und Schatten sehr interessant.

Une deuxième version plus grande de « jazz manouche ». La composition me plait plus, les musiciens sont moins suspendus dans l’espace. Mais j’ai l’impression que j’ai perdu du mouvement et que la scène ne swingue plus comme avant (ou je me trompe ?)

This is a bigger version of “jazz manouche”. The composition has changed and the musicians don’t fly in space any more. But I feel I lost some of the dynamics and rythm and have less the impression of a swinging scene now, right?

Eine etwas größere Variante des Aquarells „jazz manouche“ (Zigeunerjazz). Die Komposition ist etwas kompakter und die Musiker schweben nicht mehr im Raum. Gleichzeit hat sie aber etwas von ihrer Dynamik eingebüßt und man hat weniger den Eindruck, dass das Ganze swingt (oder täusche ich mich?)

Actuellement le blanc des cerisiers rivalise avec la neige sur le Mont Ventoux. Pour les peindre en aquarelle il faut peindre les vides autour d’eux, c’est-à-dire le fond derrière les arbres. Pour obtenir un blanc lumineux, choisissez un arrière-plan sombre.

At the moment the white of the cherry trees compete with the snow on the Mont Ventoux. To paint them in watercolour we use the negative painting method. That means we have to paint around the blossoms and to obtain a luminous white. Be sure to choose a dark background.

Die Kirschbäume die im Moment hier überall blühen, wetteifern mit dem Weiß des Schnees, der noch auf dem Mont Ventoux liegt. Um sie im Aquarell festzuhalten müssen wir um die Blüten herummalen, das heißt man malt nicht das Objekt selbst, sondern seine Umgebung. Um ein leuchtendes Weiß zu erhalten sollte man einen dunklen Hintergrund wählen.

Il y a quelques jours on a assisté à un concert du DACUTSA TRIO qui jouait au Hangar Lamy à Mormoiron. Un groupe dans le style traditionnel de Django Reinhard et d’autres musiciens manouche. J’ai pris quelques photos et j’ai fait une aquarelle à l’atelier.

Some days ago we attended a concert of the DACUTSA TRIO at Hangar Lamy in Mormoiron, a group of 3 musicians playing Django Reinhardt style gypsy jazz. I took some photos and made this watercolour painting at the studio.

Vor ein paar Tagen waren wir beim Zigeuner-Jazzkonzert des DACUTSA TRIO im Hangar Lamy in Mormoiron. Nicht nur, dass der Saal lediglich ein paar hundert Meter von unserem Domizil entfernt ist (kein Auto, nur eine Taschenlampe !), die Musiker waren ebenfalls top und die Atmosphäre entspannt. Ich schoss ein paar Fotos und malte dann im Atelier dieses Aquarell.

Quand la glycine de la tonnelle se met à fleurir, le printemps n’est plus très loin. Pour la peindre il ne faut pas tarder sous peine d’attendre encore une année de plus!

When in Provence under the pergola the Wisteria begins to bloom, you can be sure that spring is not far away anymore. Paint it quickly otherwise you have to wait for another year.

Wenn die Glyzinie in der Pergola Blüten treibt, dann ist der Frühling nicht mehr fern. Aber mit dem Malen gleich anfangen und nicht versäumen, sonst muss man wieder ein ganzes Jahr lang warten – wäre doch echt schade.
